Happy Friday! I shared this photo with my ENE 483 class. I thought I would share it with all of you.  I know that life feels really hard right now - but remember, this to will end. In a few weeks, the semester will be over, the exam that you have been stressing over, will be done, the chapter finished, and the book closed. In the end, it won't seem to matter. But what matters most is your health and well-being.  As such, I am going to try something I haven't done before and that is to set a 3-day grace period for both Assignment 3 in ENE 480 and MiniDesign 2 in ENE 483. The due dates won't officially change, but if you need extra time, you can have an additional 72 hrs, no questions asked. If you need more, just let me know. So here are the due dates: ENE 480 Assignment 3: Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 11:59 pm (grace period ends Nov. 8 at 11:59 pm) ENE 483 MiniDesign 2: Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020 at 11:59 pm (grace period ends Nov. 7 at 11:59 pm).  I hope this alleviates so...

Happy Sunday! I hope you are all doing well! This week we will look at sampling in water distribution systems. I will post the lecture notes, which I will present synchronously on Tuesday and again on Thursday. The assignment will focus on premise plumbing and distribution system monitoring and will be completed in your teams. Don't forget to do this week's participation question. Grades for Lab 3 have been posted.  I will work on grading Assignment 2 this week.  I took a walk across campus yesterday. It was absolutely beautiful (some photos are posted on the class blog, if you're interested), but it was surreal.  One could hear the recorded cheering and band from outside the stadium, but the stands were empty. The Sparty guy, dressed all in green, was on his bike and riding around the stadium.  And then there was this one lonely duck sitting on the rail by Sparty.  I hope all of you are well and were able to relax a bit this weekend. Surreal walk through campus: 10/24/2020

Happy Saturday! What a beautiful Saturday to take a walk through campus!  I have to admit it was surreal - it was the first time I have ever been on campus on a football Saturday and there were so few people on campus. And then you could hear the recorded cheers, the band, the calls from the stadium - but the stands were empty, there were no tailgaters.  Only, the guy dressed as Sparty was there as usual! Enjoy the photos!

Happy Week 7!   Congratulations! We've made it half-way through the semester. I know it has been hard and often isolating, but we've done it!  I hope you are all enjoying this weekend. I will not present any new material this week as I want you to focus on the air quality project. If you have done done so, please contact your team, which includes a student from James Madison College. Dr. Axelrod and I will again be available during class (for all ENE 480 students, irrespective) on Tuesday from 3:30-4:30 pm to answer any questions you may have about Assignment 3, which is due this coming Thursday (October 22) at 11:59 pm. I will post a grading rubric within a day or so. On Thursday, I will be available on Zoom during lab from 1-2 pm to answer any questions you may have about this project. You can also email your questions to me. And don't forget about the extra credit participation question, which is due on Tuesday! Below is a synopsis of the four videos you...

Happy Saturday, I hope all of you are doing well. I created an extra credit participation question, which is due Tuesday 10/13/2020 at 11:59 pm As a reminder, Lab 3 is due on  Thursday, October 15 at 11:59 pm (changed to accommodate students in Section 2). The rubric is posted. Assignment 2 is posted on LON-CAPA along with links to Dr. Axelrod's lecture about air quality and the legislative process, my lecture on air quality and firework displays, and the panel discussion from Thursday morning. You should have all received an email from Dr. Axelrod regarding the assignment of students into groups. In Tuesday's lab, I will give a short lecture on Air Quality Sampling and Monitoring. I will also be available to answer any questions you may have about either Lab 3 or Assignment 2  As usual, I will record the lecture. I am also planning to record a lecture on presenting results graphically. I meant to get this done much earlier, and apologize for not doing so. I'll let you know...

Happy Sunday evening, I hope the extension of the Lab 2 deadline to Tuesday at 11:59 pm has been helpful. I will also move the participation question deadline to Tuesday at 11:59 pm. During Tuesday and Thursday sections, we will discuss Assignment 2 (which will not entail any lab experiments). Briefly, Assignment 2 centers around recent concerns regarding increased use of consumer-grade fireworks, especially surrounding holiday celebrations. Some organizations have suggested legislation or regulatory interventions to control their use. However, there is also significant opposition to these changes.  You have been “hired” by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to provide “the best science and engineering” to inform legislators and/or agency staff. You will work on this assignment in your assigned teams and will be joined by an environmental policy student enrolled in MC 492.  Air Quality in the US on July 4-5, 2020 (Source: US EPA) We will also have time on Tuesday and...
